Chris Coyier tweeted an interesting trick to make a triangle with shadow with CSS. Basically use a unicode character in the HTML (CopyPasteCharacter has a collection of lots of unicode characters that you can copy and paste) and add CSS3 text-shadow to the character. Unicode characters should render just fine in most browsers on most systems. Although I am not sure about older browsers like Internet Explorer 6-7. It does depends upon the browser and system fonts installed. You might want to use some font that has such characters with CSS @font-face as an alternative.
