Phrase Elements & Special Entity Characters

In this recording we will explore some basic phrase elements and special characters.

While elements such as bold and italic can be used to visually create importance or emphasis, semantically speaking the mean nothing. This is where phrase elements are used instead.

Most used phrase elements include the strong, emphasis, and small elements.

The strong element which is used to identify content that has importance, a strong meaning or value in the text. Using the strong element will render the text bold, by default.

The emphasis element is used to bring emphasis to the text. Using the emphasis element will render the text italic, by default.

The small element is typically used to display legal notices at a small font size.

Special Entity Characters are symbols which the browser can display. A character entity is written with an ampersand sign followed by the entity name and semi-colon.

Character entities are typically used to add a non-breaking space, a long dash, ampersand sign and copyright sign to name a few.

In this example we will begin with a HTML document that already includes some content. We will then add our phrase elements and special entity characters to the code. Be sure to keep and eye in the preview window to see what each element/character does.
