Great Resources Elsewhere: May 30 to June 05

Is your website ready for Internet Explorer 8? The new version of IE8 will, theoretically, render things quite differently –more accurately, one would hope — than its predecessors. If you haven’t done any looking into what the changes are going to be, this article would be a good place to start your research. Dave links to a couple of useful IE8 resources, and also demonstrates the Meta Tag of Last Resort: a tag that will make IE8 behave as though it’s IE7.

I know I talk about typography quite a bit in the “resources elsewhere” section of this website, but today’s resource is really worth a long look. 3point7designs takes a look at ten fantastic examples of CSS-based typography from around the web. But the real gem is this: they also reveal the CSS the original designers used to make their text look so stunning. In other words, this article moves beyond simple admiration into the realm of practical application.

If you’re new to web design, having to redirect pages behind the scenes can appear to be something mystical and magical (at least, it always was to me). But here, Tommy Logic has put away the smoke and mirrors and explained two different ways to redirect web pages, be they individual pages or entire sites. He explains two different methods: .htaccess files, and using PHP headers.

Feedburner is a fantastically useful application for serving up RSS feeds, and it’s good for keeping track of basic subscription statistics. But it’s tough to do any real visual or comparative analysis of your feed’s statistics using the built-in tools Feedburner provides. Luckily, there are other options out there. SmashingApps has put together a great roundup of applications that make use of Feedburner’s API to pull your information out of Feedburner and display it in some really useful ways… including comparing your statistics to other websites using FeedBurner.
